Can I just point out that It was never stated that Mako joined the metalbenders?

Maybe there’s a division for only firebenders?
And can I also remind you that Mako is 18 and Bolin is 16? Meaning Mako is basically an adult, while Bolin is still a minor.

A LOT OF AGE RESTRICTIONS CAN HAPPEN IN 70 YEARS.

Maybe you have to be above a certain age to be an official part of the law… Maybe Bolin doesn’t want to be a cop… Who knows?

But what I’m trying to say is, you guys are freaking out because Mako “joined the metalbenders”, and Bolin wasnt the one to become the cop… Don’t judge so early you guys, it’ll probably make more sense if/when more info comes out :)
